James Faerber is the Program Director at Explore Austin. Originally from Lander, Wyoming, James grew up cross-country skiing and backpacking with his parents in the Wind River Mountain range. Since he started climbing at 14, his curiosity and passion have taken him to the Tetons, the Wind River Range, the Colorado Rockies, El Potrero Chico in Mexico, El Pico de Orizaba, Yosemite, and many other climbing areas across North America. Today, James and his family enjoy the Texas Hill Country climate that allows year-round climbing, mountain biking, and kayaking.
James graduated from Texas State with a major in Recreation Administration Management. He is a certified AMGA Single-Pitch and Climbing Wall Instructor, Wilderness First Responder, NICA certified Head Coach (mountain biking), Category 1/Expert Mountain Bike Racer, IMBA Level 1 Mountain Bike Instructor Certification, and accomplished mountaineer.
James previously worked at Austin Nature and Science Center with their adventure camp program, then at the State of Texas Rehabilitation Services guiding outdoor adventure for adults who are blind. He later ran Outdoor Wilderness Adventure, a Colorado-based company, where he would spend half of his year living in Colorado and the other in Austin. Aside from working at Explore Austin, James coaches climbing at St. Stephen’s Episcopal School during the winter.
